Take a Stylish Step Back in Time

The Very Vintage Day Out 2012Bringing together the best of all things beautiful, classic and vintage inspired, Auckland will take a trip back to a more glamourous era at the Very Vintage Day Out. Alexandra Park will be transformed into a mecca for stylish ladies and dapper gents to peruse the fashion, home wares, trinkets and other delightful merchandise, while being amused and enthralled by vintage inspired entertainment. Mark April 14th in the diary for a jolly good time!

“Whilst vintage culture has become increasingly popular and very much part of our mainstream lifestyle,” says Miss La Vida, Co-founder of the VVDO and burlesque performer. “There are few places where the public can go to find a variety of vintage style products, services and experiences all under the same roof. We’re delighted to be able to bring the vintage community together to create an event which allows lovers of vintage to mix and mingle with each other while showcasing the best of what’s on offer in New Zealand right now.” The event has been created by Miss La Vida and Miss T of Miss T Pinups, who not only excel in their professions within vintage culture, but also have a great passion for it.

Covering every aspect of the vintage experience from clothing to cars, there will be something for everyone at The Very Vintage Day Out. Shoppers will love an array of market stalls selling gorgeous garments, jewellery and items to add that antique touch to homes and gardens, whilst outside a parade ring of authentic vintage automobiles will delight car enthusiasts. A stellar line-up of talented performers from around the country will entertain the crowd throughout the day performing genres from the vintage era including: Charleston, Rock n Roll, Burlesque, Rockabilly and Close Harmony Singing. Attendees are encouraged to get into the spirit of the day with spot prizes for the best dressed ticket holders.

For those keen to learn more about the vintage lifestyle, seminars and classes will run throughout the day, with everything from burlesque and charleston dancing to retro inspired make-up and hair tutorials available. “We’ve got so many wonderful teachers who are leaders in their fields hosting a range of exciting classes, there’s even a ‘Domestic Dolly’ class on offer!” says Miss La Vida. “We want everyone to leave feeling inspired and having learned lots of tips and tricks to add vintage glamour to their everyday lives.”

The Very Vintage Day Out culminates in the crowning of Miss Vintage 2012 later in the day, which is the first pageant of its kind in New Zealand. Seven incredible beauties have been chosen to compete for the title by displaying their vintage inspired talent, charm and skills. The judges include the amazing current Miss Pin Up Australia Bunni Lambada, as well as esteemed costumier Amy Jansen-Leen and the vivacious CEO of Phoenix Cosmetics, Phoenix Renata. It promises to be a fascinating competition of style, substance and smarts as the beauties compete for the dazzling Miss Vintage crown.

With so much on offer to buy, amuse and delight, the Very Vintage Day Out is an event not to be missed for anyone with an interest in vintage culture. “Bring your friends, family and make a day of it,” says Miss La Vida. “You will love all the inspiring and amazing vintage things on offer. We can’t wait to see you there.”

Chaos & Harmony AW ‘12 ‘Common Confessions’

- Natalie Cosgrove

The latest collection from cult Kiwi shoe label Chaos & Harmony, ‘Common Confessions’, is an eclectic mix of elegant pumps, geometrically influenced wedges and structured boots.

According to Chaos & Harmony designer Beks Anderson, the collection“embodies the concept of objects of desires”. In other words, these are some seriously covetable shoes.

The collection captures the label’s signature aesthetic vision: eye-catching, expressive shoes, and the usual strong wearability combined with elements of the unexpected the label has become known for.

The winter collection was inspired by the art deco movement, as seen in the modern styling, sweeping curves, strong angular shapes and the solid block heels.

A few of my favourites include ‘York’, very cool stacked Mary Janes, the contrasting black and white ‘Jackie’ and ‘Fuller’ – definitely a must-have ankle boot for this winter’s wardrobe.

Here Lies the Bones

The just-released campaign imagery for the Stolen Girlfriends Club AW ’12 collection, Here Lies the Bones, captures the irreverent, cheeky and punk rock attitude the much-loved Kiwi label has become renowned for.

The collection, which debuted at NZFW 2011, is inspired by a globe-trotter who finds herself in some of the darker corners of the globe, and has a signature rock ‘n’ roll edge.

The stunning campaign shots feature model-of-the-moment Georgia Fowler, and were shot by Derek Henderson.

Here are a few of my favourite images. I love Georgia’s attitude in the campaign – she captures the edgy yet free-spirited essence of the collection. Edgy New Zealand fashion at its best. As a Sydney-based Kiwi, collections and campaign imagery like this remind me that more often than not, the Aussies don’t do it nearly as well. The collection drops in-store 1 February – 30 March.
